REVIEW: Superstar (Southwark Playhouse) ★★★★ December 2, 2019 // By: West End Wilma // Plays, Reviews // Comments are off Nicola Wren’s one-woman autobiographical show, draws on her life as her family’s mistake – the fifth and final child, conceived by accident and sent on a never-ending quest to gain her older siblings approval. London Theatreland is part of the Theatreland Ltd Collection. Direction by Sadie Spencer is excellent, as Wren uses simple devices to indicate various things and moments in her life, in particular the use of a clothing rain to also work as a stage curtain, among other things. Playing for a limited four week run at the Southwark Playhouse’s Little space, Nicola Wren’s Superstar is based on a true story on how one woman came to terms with who she was. From a childhood dodging paparazzi in bins to having actual Gwyneth Paltrow as your sister in law, Nicola saw her brother's stratospheric rise to fame - and whilst the parties and the perks were awesome, the level of scrutiny showed her the extreme downsides to superstardom.
