I remember my parents enjoying the BBC version of these stories on TV when I was younger. I highly recommend this book, especially for animal lovers and people with a good sense of humor. I love him because he is another author who has a gift for description. I am only a kid and I LOVE this book. Bought this for a friend who wanted an older copy. James Herriot is another one of my top writer-heroes. I'm sure his creativity embellished the stories he told, but the truth reigns supreme as we all recognize the people and situations he recounts.
I dip back into Herriot's books from time to time for the simple joy of reading again about the dogs and cats, cows and horses, and the other rich relationships that characterize his memories. I love the British humor (my hubby can always tell when I am reading a Herriot book - I laugh out loud, and often), and the fact that they are all about animals makes it even better. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. There is a lot of controversy over how genuine this account is, and I have no way of knowing whether it is true or not, but one thing I know for sure is that the "God Before Anything" attitude of Brother Yun as presented in this book is something to aspire to.

If you have ever loved a friend, human or I would recommend these books to everyone! Many of the characters are unlikable (such as the Grymps), and the likable ones are so one-dimensional they get old fast (such as Finny). They are good because I believe the author is good, and sees goo.
